The speaker for keeping the track or checking the quality of the content of music or speech or any sound-related work is usually called the monitor speakers. Unlike, any other regular speakers which are made to make the sounds audible to an audience, a monitor speaker only monitoring the sound quality or track. The types of monitor speakers are categorized into three major speakers, namely in-ear monitors, studio monitors and stage monitors.
In-ear monitors are actually earphones along with the earbuds. Closed earphones are often used by drummers to prevent sound from leaking and to help them hear the other music players, instead of hearing their own sound in the very loud and noisy environment of the performance area. Regardless the stage monitor speakers’ arrangement, each of the monitors may have a different mix to fulfill the performer’s need whom the monitors are aimed at.
The next ones, the studio monitors are also called reference monitors, are used in a recording studio and serve as the most important device for the sound engineers. With the aid of studio monitor speakers, the sound engineers can hear the original quality of a recording so that they can create the mix from the raw sound material from the studio monitors.
The last ones, the stage monitors, are installed in the performance area for the performers and not for the audience. Using this type of monitor speakers, each performer can hear each other so that they can evaluate their music while they are playing it. The stage monitors are divided into two categories in which they are different in both types of stage monitor speakers and configurations in which they can be set up which depends on the preferences of the performers.
The first type of stage monitor speakers is known as the stage wedge which has the wedge shape of enclosure. These types of monitors are usually set up on the stage floor or performance area and they are facing right to the performers. Stage wedge monitor speakers can be arranged as a group to monitor all of the performers or to monitor each performer on the stage.
The second type of monitor speakers are called side fill monitors which refer to the monitors that are placed at the side of the stage. Any types of monitors can be used for this purpose, including the stage wedge monitor speakers. All in all, a monitor speaker is designed to provide monitoring for the performers instead of for the audience.
